Give a brief bio about yourself and/or your studio.
The Yoga Shala (Calgary) is dedicated to teaching the traditional Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga System as established by Sri. K. Pattabhi Jois of Mysore, India.

Ashtanga is an ancient yoga system uniquely composed of a precisely designed sequence of postures linked together with breath and movement (Vinyasa). Practiced in its correct sequential order, Ashtanga yoga gradually leads the practitioner to rediscovering their fullest potential on all levels of human consciousness – physical, psychological and spiritual. Through this practice of correct breathing and postures, practitioners become strong and flexible and grounded. By maintaining this discipline with regularity and devotion, they acquire steadiness of body and mind.

We also offer non-traditional vinyasa based classes. All of our classes are drop in; and we offer classes for all levels. We are open 7 days a week and our classes are 1.5 hours long.

What makes your teaching or studio unique?
Since we opened our doors in March 2003, we have built a vibrant and dedicated community of amazing Ashtanga teachers and students. Our beautiful India inspired studio with a natural cork floor is warm and serene; a perfect backdrop for our classes. Our traditional Ashtanga classes are taught using the exact sequence of postures as laid out by Sri. K.Pattabhi Jois of Mysore, South India. We also offer Calgary’s only traditional morning Mysore program; Calgary’s first ongoing Community or Karma class ($4 drop in fee + a food bank donation – all proceeds go to charity) and our own “Yoga Jam” class – combining Music and Yoga for spontaneous fun!!

We are enthusiastic supporters of both local and International Charities (including a monthly $100 donation to the people of Mysore India, which is the home of our teacher and our practice)
